about
Kristian Stringer graduated from Winchester school of Art with a BA hons in Fine Art Sculpture.
Later, he joined a highly reputed London based design studio, where he helped design, fabricate & oversee some of the most prestigious art pieces and installations of recent times, for the likes of Damien Hirst, Keith Tyson, Bridgette Riley, Rachel Whiteread, to name only a few.
Kristian takes a process based approach to Design, making, simplifying and remaking a piece until it works.
The starting point is always the method of connection between each component, and this is almost exclusively a slotting joint, so no need for adhesives or traditional fixings. To start this way forces an honesty and directness throughout the design, as well as a great deal of innovation.
The properties of the materials also have an important role - especially the tensile strength of laminate covered birch ply. Joints are often strengthened by exploiting the material's natural spring, especially when weight is applied.
The end result therefore is to have designs that are a collection of meaningful elements. Each component having empathy structurally, visually and philosophically to the overall piece.
This can be challenging, but necessary to find the character of a design - a similar approach to creating a sculpture.
Kristian is based in London and currently works freelance as a bespoke furniture designer and lectures part time at Ravensbourne College of Design & Communication.
Sustainability:
All designs are carefully considered to avoid unreasonable waste from what is already a highly economic manufacturing process.
Furniture is constructed from sustainable Scandinavian birch ply and finished with accredited high pressure laminates which are also commended for their very long-lasting durability and for their state of the art manufacturing process.
